Folk Dance Basics

 Every culture around the world has its own folk dances, and there are usually specific ones for big celebrations, festivities or in the Philippines in different regions. There are a few steps that can be found in almost every dance and style. 

Here are some few steps to start...

1. Salute/Courtesy
To start a dance you first have to do a courtesy. It is a traditional gesture of greeting of men and women before a dance starts.

2. Waltz
ballroom dance in 3/4 time which first developed in Vienna as a fast paced dance to the Strauss music of the time, and eventually evolved into the slower version we now know as Waltz (or Slow Waltz).



3. Brush
To brush or sweep the foot against the floor


4. Hop
Springing into the air from one foot and landing on the same foot


5. Pivot
A traveling turn executed with thighs locked and feet apart in extended fifth position




6. Hayon-Hayon
To place one forearm in front and the other at the back of the waist.
